Dear students,
Welcome to Sexuality and Chronic Illness. My name is Marta Jimenez, and I will be your lecturer throughout this online journey. It is a pleasure to share this space with you, and I look forward to guiding you as we explore an essential yet often overlooked dimension of health: sexuality within the context of chronic conditions.
This course invites you to adopt a holistic, compassionate, and rights-based perspective on sexual health. Throughout the programme, we will examine how chronic illness can influence intimacy, identity, desire, and relationships, always integrating a biopsychosocial and gender-sensitive approach. As future nursing professionals, your role in acknowledging, assessing, and supporting sexual health will be vital to promoting quality of life and person-centred care.
The subject is delivered entirely online, and you will find all materials, activities, and forums organised into thematic units. Each unit combines theoretical content, audiovisual resources, reflection tasks, and practical applications. Your active engagement—especially in the discussion forums—will be key to creating a respectful and meaningful learning environment.
A significant component of the course is the final project, carried out in small groups. This will allow you to deepen your understanding of a topic of your choice, apply evidence-based knowledge, and develop creative ways of communicating health concepts.
